आजकल ऐसा लगता है कि भौतिक सच को आसानी से बदला जा सकता है, उस पर दोबारा विचार किया जा सकता है या उसे पूरी तरह से नए सिरे से गढ़ा जा सकता है। किसी भी तस्वीर को एकदम साफ-सुथरा बनाया जा सकता है, उसके सारे दोष मिटाए जा सकते हैं। लेकिन किसी चीज़ के मूल तक लौटना—यानी उसकी असली जड़ तक—इसका मतलब यह है कि फोटोग्राफर को गहराई से देखना होगा, टटोलना होगा, आवाज़ें सुननी होंगी, महक को पहचानना होगा और मन में ढेरों शंकाएँ रखनी होंगी। फोटोग्राफी में मेरा जीवन एक संशयवादी की तरह बीता है।
These days it seems that physical truth can easily be rearranged, rethought, or re-created outright. Any image can be made pristine, all the warts can be removed. But returning to the source of a thing - the real source - means the photographer has to watch, dig, listen for voices, sniff the smells, and have many doubts. My life in photography has been lived as a skeptic.
