बलूत का बीज बिना किसी प्रयास के अपने आप बढ़कर एक विशाल पेड़ बन जाता है; इसके लिए किसी प्रतिबद्धता की ज़रूरत नहीं होती। ठीक इसी तरह, एक बिल्ली का बच्चा अपनी सहज प्रवृत्ति के दम पर बड़ी बिल्ली बन जाता है। ऐसे जीवों में प्रकृति और उनका होना एक ही बात है। लेकिन एक स्त्री या पुरुष केवल अपने फैसलों और उनके प्रति अपनी प्रतिबद्धता के जरिए ही पूरी तरह इंसान बनता है। लोग दिन-प्रतिदिन के अपने ढेरों फैसलों से मान-सम्मान और गरिमा हासिल करते हैं। इन फैसलों के लिए साहस की ज़रूरत होती है।

The acorn becomes an oak by means of automatic growth; no commitment is necessary. The kitten similarly becomes a cat on the basis of instinct. Nature and being are identical in creatures like them. But a man or woman becomes fully human only by his or her choices and his or her commitment to them. People attain worth and dignity by the multitude of decisions they make from day by day. These decisions require courage.
