बारह साल पहले मैं और अलाना पॉप गाने लिखते-लिखते पूरी तरह ऊब चुके थे... आख़िरकार हमने थॉम्पसन ट्विंस की एक तरह से अर्थी उठाई, उन्हें दफ़्नाया और फिर न्यूज़ीलैंड आ बसे। इससे पहले मैं काफ़ी समय तक दक्षिण लंदन में रहा था, जहाँ आसपास की गलियों में रेगे संगीत गूँजता रहता था। लोगों के घरों की खिड़कियों और दुकानों से यह आवाज़ गूँजती सुनाई देती थी, और पुरानी सेकंड-हैंड दुकानों पर शानदार रेगे सिंगल महज़ पचास पैसे (डेढ़ न्यूज़ीलैंड डॉलर) में मिल जाते थे। मुझे वह संगीत हमेशा से बहुत पसंद था, इसलिए यहाँ आने के थोड़ी ही देर बाद मैंने अपने दोस्त रकाई कराइतियाना के साथ मिलकर 'इंटरनेशनल ऑब्ज़र्वर' के नाम से इलेक्ट्रॉनिक डब रिकॉर्ड्स बनाने शुरू कर दिए।

Before that I'd lived for a long time in south London where reggae was the music of the streets around me. You'd hear it booming out of people's windows and shops, and you could buy great old reggae singles for 50p (NZ1.30) in second hand shops. I'd always loved that sound, so soon after we got here I started making electronic dub records with my mate Rakai Karaitiana as International Observer.
